Project History
By way of background, the current CVSP project was initated in January 2004 when we first saw the final design of the Rancho Penasquitos skatepark. We were a little disappointed to see wood obstacles in the skatepark, and were curious about the layout, which seemed to be almost exclusively designed with street skating in mind. We were told that the design had been finalized and that it was intentionally made to accommodate the dire needs of street skateboarders. City representatives encouraged us to spearhead a movement to build a skatepark in our neighborhood - a skatepark that would offer different street-oriented terrain and more challenging transition-oriented obstacles than that offered at the Rancho Penasquitos skatepark. We took that advice to heart, and here we are today with the same vision.

So, what was going on between January 2004 and the date of the first official skatepark subcommittee meeting in June 2005? We educated the city and local representatives about proper skatepark design and the benefits of properly constructed concrete terrain, learned a lot about public skatepark advocacy, tried to identify potential sites for the skatepark, and raised local skateboarder awareness of the project. Fortunately, the local community leaders acknowledged both the legitimacy of skateboarding as a recreational activity and the need for more skatepark facilities. Although it has taken a long time to get where we are, we are confident that the CVSP will be one of the best skateparks in the San Diego area.
